Euro Color Ply plywood is a Film-Faced or Phenolic coated Baltic Birch product, imported from Latvia. Both sides of the board are coated with a heat bonded, colored translucent phenolic film that leaves the wood grain visible. (Less visible in the darker colors)

Characteristics of overlay
Surface with an overlay is smooth, glossy and hard. It resists abrasion, it is weather and moisture proof and resists commonly used chemicals, dilute acids and alkalis. The surface is easy to clean with water or steam. Abrasion resistance according to the Taber test (EN 438-2): depends on applied film, conditions of product storage, thickness of film (see below) a.o.

Overlaid plywood’s wear resistance may be superior to 10’000.

Film color
Phenol films: dark brown (120, 130 (wear resistant) and 220g/m2), light brown (120g/m2), green (120g/m2), black (120g/m2), red (220g/m2), honey (120g/m2), UV resistant films: opal white (174g/m2).
Under transparent films BB grade veneer can be applied.

Features
Durable surface with an architectural edge which eliminates the need for edge-banding
Colored, translucent film leaving the wood grain visible (Black, Dark-Brown, Light Brown, Green, Red)
Smooth surface, easily cleaned and odor free panel suitable for food products
Rigid and structural properties
Euro Color Ply is an ideal material for the furniture and joinery industries. Its features provide smooth and superior surfaces that are ready for use. The panels are rigid and often used for making jigs and tooling as they are extremely durable.

Advantages
Environmentally friendly, durable, easily workable, hygienic, odor free, easy-to-clean, wear-resistant, weather- and water-proof, resists commonly used chemicals. Riga Form for shuttering can be re-used many times.

Applications

Desks, table tops, shelves
Fittings for kitchens, offices, shops
Garden furniture
Signs, billboards
Jigs and tooling
Trees grow slowly in the Eastern European climate and thus the wood it produces is close-grained and of consistent high quality. Birch is of uniform consistency and it has excellent strength, peeling and gluing properties. Phenol Formaldehyde glue used to laminate the plies is safe and water-resistant, making these Exterior Grade panels.

Smooth phenolic film faced plywoods are tough, waterproof and scratch resistant. They are designed to offer an improved quality of finish and help achieve multiple re-uses in concrete formwork, If cared for properly between pours, the smooth and chemical-resistant surface can allow them to be reused up to 100 times.

Although they are were originally designed for use with concrete formwork, as is often the case, these panels have since found a home in a wide range of unplanned uses, where the smooth, easy-clean surface is desirable.Customers that use the panels for this end-use are aware that the panel colours may vary, and that patches may be visible through the translucent film coating.

The panels are most often stocked in dark brown, but are often also available in black, light grey and dark grey. Other colours (e.g. blue, green, red, yellow) are available to special order in single multiple pallets per item. Also available single-sided as the reverse of our range of phenolic slip-resistant plywoods

These panels are often used in the manufacture of smooth faced furniture or sports rebound boards, although their use as rebound boards has all but disappeared, to be superseded in most cases by polypropylene faced birch plywood due to their better UV-stability performance.

Gluing classes
Plywood is glued with waterproof phenol formaldehyde resin adhesive. The weather and boiling water resistant bonding meets the requirements of the following standards:

rd EN 314 / 3 class
BS 1203 / H 4 (previously WBP)
DIN 68705 Part 3 / type BFU 100
Formaldehyde emission
In accordance with the standard EN 13986 the formaldehyde emission meets the Class E1 requirements (test method EN 717 Part 2). Plywood glued with phenolformaldehyde resins meets the CARB Phase 2 and Japanese 4-Star Regulation’s requirements.

Overlaying
A smooth phenol or an UV resistant film, which is hot-pressed onto the surface, is used as an overlay. The phenol film is composed of a basic paper which is impregnated with phenol resin. The UV resistant film is impregnated with a special thermosetting mixture of polymers containing amino resins. Overlaying with higher resistance to abrasion and multi-layer overlaying is also possible (respectively 240 g/m2, 440 g/m2, special wear resistant film, etc.). Multi-layer overlaying gives superior wear resistance.

Film Faced Plywood

Film-faced plywood (also known as phenolic plywood) is a special type of plywood with both sides coated with a wear-resistant, waterproof film. The film is meant to protect the wood from harsh environmental conditions and extend the service period of the plywood. Film-faced plywood is called phenolic plywood because both sides are soaked in phenolic resin to create a durable, water-resistant, smooth, and stable surface.

Thomes offers many different colors of phenolic plywood:

Industry standards
Dark Brown Phenolic
Black Phenolic
Thomes also offers special colors of phenolic plywood:

Light brown Phenolic
Green Phenolic
Yellow Phenolic
Marine Blue Phenolic
Two basic versions of film-faced plywood are available at Thomes: film/film (F/F) and film/wire (F/W). Some of the benefits of phenolic plywood available at Thomes are:

Edges are sealed for longevity
Relatively low price
Longer shelf life
Higher resistance to cracking
Suitable for logo printing
Ideal solution for transport and construction industries
TWO BASIC VERSIONS ARE AVAILABLE
Film/Film (F/F)

Film Face PlywoodThis version is smooth on both sides and can be produced in multiple colors. F/F was first developed as a concrete forming panel, which remains its principal use. However, it can be used in any application where moisture resistance, strength, and abrasion resistance are required.

FILM/WIRE (F/W)
Film Face Plywood

F/W wire mesh plywood has a wire mesh surface on one side and is smooth on the other. It has the same strength and moisture-resistant properties as F/F film-faced plywood with the extra benefit of non-slip capabilities

In both versions, the edges are factory sealed with an acrylic sealant to minimize moisture ingress. Phenolic-coated plywood is available in:

Light brown Phenolic (Grammature: 117g/m2)
Black Phenolic (Grammature: 120 g/m2)
Yellow Phenolic (Grammature: 167 g/m2)
Green Phenolic (Grammature: 120 g/m2)
HEXA DESIGN PHENOLIC FILM
The Hexa option is an excellent choice for decorative flooring due to the hexagonal pattern. Both sides of the plywood are coated with a high-density paper film that is saturated with a phenol-formaldehyde resin for maximum anti-slip prevention. It can be coated in grey or brown film and is often used in the transportation industry as flooring due to its extreme slip- and wear-resistant properties. Common applications include:

Loading platforms
Trailers
Vans
Stages, stands, terraces
Scaffolding
Playground and sports facilities
APPLICATIONS OF FILM-FACED OR PHENOLIC PLYWOOD

DOMESTIC APPLICATIONS
Phenolic-coated plywood is used to make furniture such as chairs, tables, beds, and sofas. Film-faced plywood is water-resistant and will not warp or experience mechanical stress during the manufacturing process. Compared to normal plywood, film-faced plywood has more wear-resistant surfaces and is durable, making it ideal for use in constructing high-quality furniture.

These properties also make it a popular choice for constructing children’s toys.

INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS
Phenolic-coated plywood is used in the transportation industry for bus and truck flooring. According to the types of face/back, phenolic plywood can be divided into smooth and anti-slip film-faced plywood. Anti-slip phenolic plywood is used to create flooring materials for trucks, vehicles, and other platforms.

Another use is to make shuttering boxes. Due to the water-resistance of film-faced plywood, it is recommended for shuttering boxes because they are used to contain wet concrete during the drying process.
