Russia strengthens control over the export volume of birch, pine, and other timber from May 17, 2023

The Federal Forestry Agency’s News Office (Rosleskhoz) has recently implemented a new feature in Legais: starting from May 17, 2023, it has strengthened control over timber exports, and forest users can only issue electronic accompanying documents for the quantity of exported raw materials.

According to Vyacheslav Spirenkov, Deputy Director of the Rosleskhoz Information Service of the Federal Forestry Administration, this functional innovation is mainly aimed at limiting unethical users in forest harvesting and transportation. Previously, these unethical forest users would take timber exceeding the limit from forest logging sites, and this situation will not exist from May 17th onwards.

At the same time, if the quantity of timber available for harvesting in a forest area has been exhausted, the users of Lesegais will no longer be able to create a Electronic data interchange system for timber transportation, and cannot harvest and transport timber from that area,

Starting from last year, Russia began adjusting its timber export strategy. From this adjustment, it can be seen that Russia’s management of timber harvesting has become more standardized, which to some extent has also achieved the sustainable development of local forest resources.
